GUATEMALA
Guatemala has to be one of the most fascinating country I have ever been to. It caught me completely by surprise and since the beginning of my trip I was overwhelmed by all the possibilities that this Central American state has to offer. The combination of jungle and archeological sites is probably what impressed me the most. As a lover of tropical jungles, I was mesmerised by the incredible vegetation and wildlife found in the Northern part of the country, which is also the ancient home of the Mayan civilisation. Visiting the city of Tikal was such an experience that to date I just can’t stop thinking about it, especially the memory of seeing Mayan pyramids slowly arising from the horizon during a misty sunrise, with the scary sounds of Howler monkeys in the background.
The 5 days jungle trek to reach the biggest Mayan pyramid ever build, El Mirador, was also an unforgettable highlight of my trip. Walking for days through an ancient mayan highway and diving so deep into the lowland jungle to explore such mysterious constructions is something that one can hardly forget.
The cultural centre of Antigua, with its beautiful architecture and local tradition, was also a place worth visiting. Tasty local food and colourful traditions are something typical of this wonderful city. From there, another crazy adventure started: climbing Volcano Acatenango to witness the erupting Volcano Fuego shooting lava up in the night sky. Very challenging trek, especially due to the high altitude and steepness of the trail.
The strong cultural heritage of Guatemala was very well represented also around the enormous Lake Atitlan and its numerous small towns scattered all around. The vibrant colours of the traditional dresses, local foods and even vehicles will strike any visitor and make them feel in touch with the strong mayan heritage, still present in the country today.
