ICELAND
Iceland is one of those countries that should be in everyone’s bucket list. its incredible dramatic landscapes, shaped by the continuous volcanic activity and the extraordinary forces of the glaciers, have the power to truly impress and leave you in awe. From the Golden Circle in the West, the Diamond Circle up North, every part of this island has something to offer and plenty of hidden treasures. Wonderfull waterfalls, dramatic fiords, active volcanos, geothermal pools and geysers, ancient lava fields covered in soft and pillowy moss, sharp rocks and powerful glaciers; these are some of the things you can mostly expect to find. Many of these wonders are easily accessible from the popular Ring Road number 1, which runs along the whole country following the coastline. The highlands, on the other hand, are much harder to reach and often require special vehicles and organised expeditions. There you will find the most untouched, harsh environments where barely any life form can survive, especially in the winter time, but the views are guaranteed to leave you speechless.
Having worked seasonally on this island for multiple years, I had the chance to extensively explore the country. My favourite part has to be the South Coast and Reykjanes peninsula in the South West. Here I had the incredible experience of witnessing the power of Nature when in 2021 I visited multiple times the active eruption site of the Fagradalsfjall complex. In 2023 I was able to visit once more the peninsula and walk the 10km trail heading toward Litli Hrutur, the newly born volcano. Never in my life before I had such closeness to an active volcano. Observing the boiling lava coming out of the crater, admiring up close the glowing hot lava and feeling its sounds and heat are to date some of the most incredible things I have ever experienced.
