SABAH
Sabah is the northern state of Malaysian Borneo and it is often one of the main destinations for those wanting to visit this wonderful country. The main reason is the abundance of National Parks and many areas of untouched wilderness, thriving with life and breathtaking landscapes. One of the icons of Sabah is undoubtedly Mount Kinabalu. With its impressive 4095 meters of elevation it is the highest mountain in Malaysia. Climbing to its summit is a real adventure and it is one of the main attractions in this region. You can walk across a constantly changing landscape, going from a hot to cold climate, and exploring the incredible vegetation of the highland jungle is a fascinating and unique experience. For those seeking real jungle adventures this area offers many other mountains and high difficulty treks, which often requires proper organised expeditions and guidance. I took the challenge and in 2022 I decided to climb Mount Tambuyukon and also Mount Trusmadi, both among the highest mountains in the country and well known for those who want to see gigantic carnivorous plants in the wild. The treks require multiple days of hiking, camping in the wild and enduring the fast changing mountain climate. Being prepared for the daily pouring heavy rain is a must. But the reward for such endeavour is worth the struggle.
Luckily, Sabah is not only hard mountain trekking. Plenty of other National Parks offer much more relaxing hiking possibilities, together with the chance of spotting some really spectacular wildlife.
The area of Ranau and Poring, not far from Kinabalu National Park, offers geothermal baths, many lighter hikes and even the chance to see Rafflesia blooms in one of its protected areas.
A real wildlife hotspot is Kinabatangan River. Cruising along its bed with a boat, especially in early morning, is a great way to explore many animals and birds, such as Proboscis Monkeys, Crocodiles, Hornbills and for the lucky ones also Orangutans and Pygmy Elephants.
Deep into the centre of Sabah we find Danum Valley, one of the oldest rainforests in the world with its 130 million years. It is a big biodiversity hotspot and many endemic species of animals can be spotted there. Unfortunately, getting there is no easy task.
Tawau Hills Park is another great National Park, very easy to access from the city of Tawau. The beautiful lowland jungles and the richness in wildlife makes it among my favourite National Parks of Sabah.
